This weekend is International Womens Day and so we're taking the opportunity to shine a light on our very own Charlotte Towell, our Big Data Developer at Deep Space! Charlotte is the architect behind Deep Space’s web-based platform, building everything from dashboards to automations, databases, and AI-powered tools. As the mastermind behind Deep Space Actions and the driving force behind their API, she’s not just coding, she’s shaping the future of construction data management while mentoring the next generation of developers along the way.

‍Who are you and where do you consider your hometown to be? 
I'm Charlotte Towell, I grew up around the Gold Coast and then in-land to Boonah, and now I call Brisbane City home 😊

Why did you join Deep Space? 
I was looking for my next challenge and wanted to work on something with real impact and interesting problems. I came from a bit of AEC background already so joining a start-up in that space was perfect to work on things that make real change.

What do you do at Deep Space? 
I’m the developer for the platform side at Deep Space. That’s our web-based platform, dashboards, automations, everything in the cloud, database stuff, and all the magic that happens in between. I’m involved in scoping out and building features like Deep Space Actions, or creating our API. Recently I’ve also been mentoring our new intern to help grow the dev team! ‍

How has your role changed since you started Deep Space? 
I originally started as a Power BI developer and my role has now grown to what I call the ’everything developer’. I think the most notable change is I love how involved I am with deciding the direction and implementation of our platform.

What’s the best thing about working on a product for Construction? 
The best thing is how horrible the state of data management is in construction because it keeps me busy and gives me many new problems to tackle!

What is your top priority right now? 
My current priority is working on our recently released CDE and specifically some AI enhancements to improve KAI and integrate it with project documents for more 2D document analysis. Behind the scenes, it’s figuring out how to get good results from AI performantly when you’re dealing with the large scale of big data.

What are you most excited for over the next 12 months? 
I’m most excited to get my hands back into KAI and upgrade it beyond our alpha release. LLMs are advancing so fast these days and Deep Space is so well positioned with the huge repository of data we have so I can’t wait to work on more advanced AI applications for projects. In the next 12 months we can expect to see KAI in more places than just a chat bot as AI becomes heavily embedded in our platform.
